Yes, a yacht at anchor in Cannes is a real option during a congress, and often the only one when berths are fully booked or reserved for exhibitors. It suits dinners, lunches and small-group meetings, provided you accept a short tender transfer from the Croisette and a dependence on sea conditions. At a berth, a large yacht routinely hosts evening receptions for 200 guests; a yacht at anchor in Cannes stays with formats of 10 to 30 people. For a high-capacity event or a continuous flow of visitors between meetings at the Palais des Festivals, a berth therefore remains far preferable.

Yacht at anchor in Cannes or at a berth: what is the practical difference during a congress?
The difference lies less in the yacht than in access. At a berth, guests walk on board a few minutes from the Palais. At anchor, every arrival goes through the yacht’s tender. That detail shapes the whole event:
- Access: immediate at a berth; by tender runs at anchor, with an embarkation point to organize.
- Guest numbers: this is the biggest gap. At a berth, a large yacht routinely hosts 200-guest cocktail receptions, within the limits of its operating certificate. At anchor, capacity usually drops to 10 to 30 guests: everyone arrives by tender, and hosting at sea is managed differently from hosting alongside.
- Timing: at a berth, guests come and go freely; at anchor, arrivals and departures follow the tender schedule.
- Weather: an easterly wind or swell can make transfers uncomfortable, or lead the captain to suspend them.
- Privacy: the key advantage of anchoring. No passers-by on the quay, and an open view of the Croisette and the Lérins Islands.

Why are berths so scarce during Cannes congresses?
The constraint comes from concentrated demand: thousands of companies look for a hospitality venue over the same five to seven days. According to the City of Cannes, the Vieux-Port redevelopment includes 9 additional berths for vessels up to 75 metres, with delivery announced for early 2027; we cover the project in our article on yacht berths at the Vieux-Port de Cannes and in our update on berth numbers in 2027.
For some events, berthing is also a matter of eligibility. At MIPIM® and Cannes Lions®, berthing within the event perimeter is reserved for official exhibitors under the organizer’s rules; obtaining the authorization itself remains conditional. A company that is not exhibiting naturally turns to a yacht at anchor in Cannes or to a neighbouring port. The characteristics of the Albert-Édouard pier also affect accepted draughts and lengths.
Where can a yacht anchor in the Bay of Cannes?
Not just anywhere: a yacht at anchor in Cannes must stay within regulated areas. In October 2020, the Maritime Prefect for the Mediterranean signed an order specific to the western Alpes-Maritimes (No. 205/2020) prohibiting vessels of 24 metres and over from anchoring in defined areas, to protect Posidonia seagrass, a protected species. According to the specialist press, offenders face fines of up to €150,000 and one year’s imprisonment.
In practice, for a yacht at anchor in Cannes, the choice of anchorage is the captain’s, based on the orders and charts published by the Maritime Prefecture. For the event host, the consequence is simple: the yacht’s position is not always the one in the brochure photo, and transfer distance can vary from day to day with the wind.

How do transfers between the Croisette and the yacht work?
To reach a yacht at anchor in Cannes, based on our operational experience, a tender run generally takes five to fifteen minutes, depending on the anchoring distance and sea state. Each run carries a limited number of passengers, set by the yacht’s equipment. Three points deserve planning:
The embarkation point
It is a pontoon or quay accessible to tenders. Its use may be subject to port rules or a prior request: settle this before sending invitations.
Staggered arrivals
For 30 guests, plan staggered arrival slots rather than a single time. A host on the pontoon, with a guest list and the yacht’s contact, avoids queues.
Guest comfort
Flat shoes recommended, assistance for guests with reduced mobility assessed case by case, life jackets on hand. Small details, but they are what guests remember.
Which corporate hospitality formats work at anchor?
A yacht at anchor in Cannes excels when guest numbers are controlled and privacy matters: board dinners, investor lunches, confidential signings, sunset cocktails, or on-board accommodation for a small team. It is less suited to open houses, visitor flows between meetings, or large-capacity evenings. To compare formats, read our guide to hosting clients on a yacht charter during a Cannes trade show.

Can the weather derail an event at anchor?
Yes, and it is the main limitation of a yacht at anchor in Cannes. In March, around MIPIM®, the sea is more changeable than in May or June. The decision to keep running transfers rests with the captain, for safety reasons. Good practice is to plan a fallback from the start: a berth if one becomes available, or a venue ashore for the evening.
Is anchoring cheaper than a berth?
Not necessarily. A yacht at anchor in Cannes avoids berthing fees, but adds other costs: tender runs, pontoon hosting staff, fuel for generators. The gap depends on the yacht and the week. For budget benchmarks, see our page on yacht charter prices during Cannes congresses.
Do you need authorizations to host guests at anchor?
It depends. For a yacht at anchor in Cannes as at a berth, depending on the event, the intended use and applicable regulations, authorizations from the Port of Cannes, the City of Cannes and/or the event organizer may be required, particularly for the embarkation point and for any commercial activity on board. Cannes Yachts Booking assists with preparing and submitting applications, without being able to guarantee that authorizations will be granted, which remains the sovereign and exclusive decision of the competent authorities and organizers.
Frequently asked questions
Can you charter a yacht at anchor in Cannes during a congress?
Yes. Anchoring in the Bay of Cannes is a common alternative when berths are fully booked or reserved for exhibitors. It works best for small-group hospitality, with tender transfers from the Croisette.
How many guests can you host on a yacht at anchor?
In practice, 10 to 30 guests at anchor, compared with a routine 200 at a berth on a large yacht: at sea, every guest arrives by tender and capacity drops sharply. The exact guest capacity depends on the yacht, its flag and its operating certificate.
Can a yacht over 24 metres anchor anywhere in the bay?
No. In the western Alpes-Maritimes, an order of the Maritime Prefect for the Mediterranean prohibits vessels of 24 metres and over from anchoring in defined areas, to protect Posidonia seagrass meadows. The captain selects the anchorage according to the orders and charts in force.
How long is the transfer between the Croisette and the yacht?
Based on our operational experience, allow five to fifteen minutes per run, depending on the anchoring distance and sea state, plus boarding time for each run.
What happens if the weather turns on the day of the event?
The decision to keep running transfers rests with the captain, for safety reasons. It is wise to plan a fallback from the outset: a berth if one becomes available, or a venue ashore.
Does anchoring remove the need for any authorization?
No. Depending on the event, the intended use and applicable regulations, authorizations from the Port of Cannes, the City of Cannes and/or the event organizer may be required, particularly for guest embarkation points.
Is Cannes Yachts Booking an official partner of Cannes congresses?
